Athlete jumps to SA team

Hoërskool Goudrif and Germiston Callies was well represented by Pedro Aaron (17) at the Ekurhuleni North District 2016 School Sports Awards.

Germiston Callies athlete Pedro Aaron (17) has had a good athletics year.

Aaron was awarded the Male Athlete of the Year award in the Secondary School category of the Ekurhuleni North District 2016 School Sports Awards held in Kempton Park’s Civic Centre on December 7.

Aaron is a 100m, 200m, 400m hurdles, 110m hurdles and long jump athlete who represented Hoërskool Goudrif and Germiston Callies throughout the year.

“This award was given to him based on his long jump performance,” said Aaron’s coach, Stephanè Kotzè.

“He is a hard worker; he trains hard and is committed to his work.”

The youngster said he was humbled by the award.

“This success makes me feel good and I am proud of myself for training hard and giving my all at competitions,” he said.

Due to his success, Aaron has also been selected into the South African Youth team that is set to compete next year.

“He was crowned the South African Youth Champion in long jump which qualified him for the team,” said Kotzè.

“I am proud of him and excited about his future, it looks bright.”

Other accolades achieved in long jump this year:

  • Central Gauteng Athletics Youth Champion.
  • Gauteng Schools Long Jump Champion.
  • South African Schools Long Jump Champion.

“Thank you to Pick n Pay Primrose for their continued sponsorship which has helped Aaron throughout his competitions,” said Kotzè.

“He is taking a break now but January he will be back in training and ready to increase this year’s personal best of 7.24m to 7.55m.”
