Warning – severe thunderstorms predicted for this afternoon

Beware of severe thunderstorms and heavy rain which may cause flash floods – says South Africa Weather Service.

Many of Gauteng residents woke up to a wet Thursday morning, complete with the rumbling of thunder in the distance.

The South African Weather Service has predicted a wet couple of days with a 60 per cent chance of rain for Gauteng, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal from today until Saturday.

In addition to this the weather service has urged residents to be on full alert as it warns of:

  • Severe Thunderstorms:
Severe thunderstorms with the possibility of large hail and damaging winds and reduced visibility expected in some areas of Gauteng from 11am to 11pm.
  •  Flooding:
Localised flooding is expected in  low-lying parts of the province until 10pm.

Motorists are reminded to take the necessary precautions when travelling.

They are encouraged to reduce speed and increase their following distances and headlights should be kept on at all times to increase visibility.

Residents should also ensure that they shelter their pets.
