Ten-year-old boy drowns in Natalspruit River

Current sweeps young boy away resulting in his death.

An Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) water rescue team retrieved the body of a 10-year-old boy from a strong Natalspruit River current, on Sunday.

The body was recovered near Zonkizizwe at about 1.50pm.

“As per information received on the scene, a group of young boys jumped into the river with the intention of swimming and unfortunately, one of the boys was overcome by the strong current and drowned,” said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for DEMS.

“The boy was pulled from the water by a rescue team from the Zonkizizwe Fire Station who immediately initiated pre-hospital medical treatment, but regrettably he didn`t respond positively.

“He was declared dead on the scene by paramedics.”

An inquest docket has been opened by the police for investigation.

In a separate incident earlier on the same day, at about 8am, three adults survived drowning while performing baptism rituals in the same river near Vosloorus.

The men were overcome by the strong current and found themselves stuck in between the reeds in the middle of the river.

A rescue team from the Vosloorus Fire Station, managed to save all three of them. They were treated for shock on the scene and transported to hospital.
