Athletes tackle Germiston triathlon

Hundreds of athletes braved the chilly weather to take part in the Central Gauteng Triathlon, last Sunday.

The cold weather, rain and strong wind did not deter athletes from taking part in the Central Gauteng (CGT) triathlon and duathlon last Sunday.

The Germiston Lake was a hub of activity as athletes eagerly awaited their heats, while families and supporters cheered on the competing athletes as they moved through the race’s swim, cycle route and run.

The action-packed day was broken into several sections, one of which was the junior 12 to 17 years old division, where Jonathan Morrison came in first in a time of 37 minutes and 23 seconds for the boys, followed by Casey Bosman in first for the girls with a time of 40 minutes and 54 seconds.

The main race divisions, senior men and women 20 years old and older, were wrought with problems for a number of the competitors.

The strong winds and rain caused an underlying current in the lake which, coupled with the colder than expected temperatures, meant that some swimmers made the choice to retire from the swim, while some were rescued by on-scene lifeguards.

Brad Matthew Edwards won the standard triathlon in a time of one hour, 36 minutes and 37 seconds, followed by Casper Moodie, Grant Wilesmith and Bryan Difford.

Jayme-Sue Vermaas was the first woman across the finish line in a time of one hour, 55 minutes and 11 seconds.
In the standard duathlon, Stefan Van Niekerk was named the winner in a time of two hours 12 minutes and 47 seconds followed by Nico Schoeman, Hadley McCormick and Jazz Van Rensburg.

Elisa Gianchino finished first in the women’s standard duathlon in a time of two hours, 23 seconds and 14 seconds.

The event was used as the main selection event for the 2017 CGT triathlon provincial team.

The next triathlon will take place in January 2017.
