Woman and suspect wounded in shoot-out

Man arrested for attempted murder and the possession of a hijacked vehicle.

A 28-year-old man was recently arrested in Katlehong’s Siphamandla informal settlement, following a high speed chase with police.

The chase began when officers approached the accused and his passenger, who were driving in a silver BMW they believed had been hijacked in Brackendowns.

The suspect fled before officers could reach him.

During the chase, the accused allegedly fired shots at the pursuing officer, who returned fire.

“During the exchange of gunfire one of the men was hit in the thigh and lower leg, while the other managed to escape unharmed,” said Capt Mega Ndobe, from the Ekurhuleni West Cluster SAPS.

“A manhunt has been launched to find him.”

The suspect was charged with attempted murder and possession of a hijacked vehicle, and taken to hospital under police guard.

“Police are investigating whether the man was also responsible for hijacking the vehicle,” said Ndobe.

A woman was also injured in the shooting and was taken to hospital for treatment.

“Officers are investigating if she is linked to the incident in any way,” Ndobe said.
