Elderly find their groove during celebrations

Gafa hosted a number of events to show senior citizens how special they are.

It was all about the elderly last week, with a week of activities lined-up for senior citizens in celebration of Week of the Aged.

The Germiston Association for the Aged (Gafa) organised an action-packed week of activities for the elderly and all involved had a great time.

As a community project, the GCN teamed up with Gafa to collect tinned food for the seniors who are members of the Makause Developing Service Centre in the Makause informal settlement and the Help Mekaar Service Centre in Dukathole.

The team also attended the Ronéll Erasmus concert held at the NG Cachet Church hall, on Wednesday, to help out by serving the elderly, as well as handing over a cheque for R805 raised through selling advertisements by GCN sales cadet Marianda Mnyakama, the tinned food collected and an array of deodorants sponsored by Revlon SA.

The elderly packed the hall and had great fun singing along and dancing to the great tunes sang by Ronéll.

They also enjoyed tucking into vetkoek and mince with a cup of tea.

Other events senior citizens got to enjoy were a walk, Bingo and a fun day filled with games of all different types.

The fun day, which took place on Friday at the Protea Old Age Home, saw the participants taking on lots of games of skill in teams.

This helped get them active and promoted team work.

Overall it was a great celebration of the elderly and they got to have a lot of fun.
