Masina determined to start his term on a high note

Clr Mzwandile Masina, the new executive mayor of Ekurhuleni, shared his plans for his first 100 days in office.

Ekurhuleni’s executive mayor, Clr Mzwandile Masina, recently invited the media to a briefing in the mayor’s parlour, at the Germiston Civic Centre.

The briefing allowed the mayor to outline key decisions made at the mayoral lekgotla, as well as to discuss his plans for the metro in his first 100 days in office.

“It is just over a month since we took the oath of office,” he said in his greeting.

“The mayoral committee and senior management got together for the mayoral lekgotla, with the aim of hatching effective and implementable plans towards a livable Ekurhuleni.”

During the briefing, and later in the September council meeting, Masina explained several plans to improve the lives of all Ekurhuleni residents.

“We are clear about the agenda to restore the dignity of our people through the roll out of better and quality services,” he said.

“At this point, allow me to share some of the highlights of this administration’s 100-day programme, which will take us to the end of the year and set the tone until 2021.”

Plans include:

  • The official opening of the new Khumalo, Tsietsi and Dukathole clinics, which will make health care services accessible to no fewer than 300 000 additional Ekurhuleni people.
  • A crack-down on criminals and drug peddlers in hotspot areas like the Kempton Park, Germiston and Boksburg CBDs.
  • Ensuring that the SAPS’s services are accessible to more people.
  • The official opening of a new EMPD precinct in the Zonkizizwe area.
  • Work will begin on the establishment of the Ekurhuleni Power Station, which aims to produce an additional 10 per cent of energy for the citizens of the metro.
  • Several informal settlements will receive electricity.
  • The issue of the unstable electricity supply in Germiston will be attended to and R150-million will be used to bring relief to businesses, industry and residents in the area.
  • A total of 1 700 old and leaking water meters will be replaced.

In addition, the mayor officially launched the Siyaqhuba Programme.

“Siyaqhuba will focus on the accelerated roll-out of basic services in areas such as water and sanitation, environmental management and transport,” he said.

“It will include the BRT in the Tembisa area, the roll-out of 24-hour clinics and pick-up points, the implementation of the 10-point economic revival plan, and road construction and storm water infrastructure.

“It will also deal with the prompt turnaround time to service delivery complaints,” he said.

Masina’s 100-day plans were met with approval by some, however, not all of the parties agreed with the plans, with the DA commenting that these were just further false promises to the people of the metro.
