Athlete heads for Mpumalanga

Local athlete Ntombi Gumede (10) to represent Gauteng at the South African Schools Cross-Country Championships.

Primrose Primary School’s Ntombi Gumede (10) has made her school and family proud with her recent achievement.

Ntombi Gumede has qualified to compete at the South African Schools Cross-Country Championships taking place in Mpumalanga on Saturday, October 1.

“This achievement is a result of her impressive performances in three qualifying meetings,” said the local school’s head of sports, Wilson Msibi.

“She placed second at her last qualifying meeting, the Gauteng Schools Championships, held in Mulbarton, recently.

“We are very proud of her achievement, she is a role model to most of the children in the school.

“She just showed that through hard work and dedication, you can achieve anything.

“If you can dream it, you can have it.”

The talented youngster told the GCN that she is appreciative of the support she gets.

“Thank you to my father, Zakhele, and Msibi for their support and everything they are doing for me,” she said.

“My wish is to win in Mpumalanga.”

Msibi wishes Gumede the best of luck for the competition.

“Without putting a lot of pressure on her, I hope she enjoys the race and she must know that we wish her well, all of us in Gauteng, as she will be representing us,” he said.

“I hope she will do well and she must work hard.”

The only challenge that is posing a threat towards Gumede achieving her goal is funds.

Msibi also said that funds are needed for the trip.

“We are currently trying to raise funds to make the trip possible,” he explained.

“Transport is the main problem, we are appealing to the community to help with funds for transportation.

“We appreciate any form of sponsorship, we will be happy with anything we receive.”
