Capturing the moment

Local photographer Arabang Moteetee plans to attempt a photographic world record that will see him taking photos for 15 hours.

”A picture is worth a thousand words.” This is a belief that Katlehong photographer Arabang Moteetee (27) holds dear.

Arabang first fell in love with photography while he was in Cape Town, studying film.

“I was studying film when they showed us a documentary on photography.

“I love film, but it can’t capture the emotion or tell a story like photography can,” he explained.

Thus began his six-year journey as a photographer.

“I started with fashion photography, but have moved more into documentary photography.

“I want my photos to tell a story,” he said.

Now Arabang wants to bring his passion to his own community.

“I want to introduce photography to the people of the townships, as I believe it is still a relatively unknown or understood medium,” he said.

It is with this in mind that Arabang will attempt a 15-hour photoshoot and photo expo.

The exhibition and record attempt will be held on Saturday, August 27, and will run from 11am to 2am.

“Nobody has previously attempted to achieve this,” he explained excitedly.

On the day, Arabang will set up a studio at 7 Car Park, in Siluma View, Katlehong, where he will take portrait photographs of guests attending the event officially named “Photography in our Life Time”.

Arabang will also display his work alongside fellow photographers Dineo Mnyanga and Sikelela Balintulo.

“We will showcase photographs that paint the picture of living in South Africa,” Arabang explained.

Guests will also be treated to live music and have the chance to make their mark at the event, by signing a poly-mesh cloth.

“We plan to donate the cloth to the Africa Museum in Johannesburg after the event,” Arabang said.
