WARNING: Strong winds expected to hit Gauteng overnight

Emergency services are warning residents to take precautions as strong winds are expected tonight.

The metro wishes to inform residents that the South African weather forecasters have predicted that strong and damaging winds will hit Gauteng from midnight tonight (August 2) until the wee hours of Wednesday, August 3.

“These winds are sudden and can cause much damage.

“Residents are advised to stay indoors and where possible, away from the windows that open towards the severe winds.

“Those who are travelling should be aware of cross-winds, especially between buildings and look out for flying debris.

“You should stay clear of fallen trees and power lines,” said Themba Gadebe, the spokesman for the metro.

“Parked aircraft should be pointed into the direction of the wind and secured.”

The metro’s disaster and management services officials will be on high alert for as long as the adverse weather conditions persist.

Should there be an emergency, residents are encouraged to contact the Ekurhuleni emergency centre on 011 458-0911/ 10177.
