Councillors take the voices of the people to council regarding power outages

The DA in the metro has handed over petitions to council regarding the electricity problems in Ekurhuleni.

Demanding answers to questions about the ongoing power issues, which continue to plunge the city into darkness, the DA has submitted a petition to council demanding the metro give urgent attention to this crisis.

“Week in and week out residents of Ward 21 and other areas are affected by the ongoing power outages, and, when officials are contacted regarding the issue, they provide very little clarity on the real problems,” said Ward 21 councillor Tania Campbell.

“Instead they opt for the same tiresome excuses, that the cables have been stolen, or there is a substation fault.

“Even the notorious call taking centre is unaware of the problems causing these rampant power outages when it is contacted.”

Striving to ensure that the voices of the people throughout the metro are heard, Campbell championed a petition demanding that MMC for water and energy, Doctor Xhakaza, urgently addresses the continued power outages.

“I handed this petition to the Speaker of Council, Patricia Kumalo, at our recent council meeting,” Campbell said.

“I submitted the first batch of petitions with over 1 600 signatures from my ward alone, while fellow DA councillors also submitted petitions from their communities.”

“Residents are growing frustrated over the repackaged excuses by the metro, who are trying to divert attention away from the harsh reality that they have underspent on the repair and maintenance of the electrical infrastructure throughout Ekurhuleni.

“Communities are angered and frustrated.

“The large number of signatures shows the call on the executive mayor, Mondli Gungubele, to act decisively before leaving the metro in complete darkness when he vacates his office after the local elections.”
