EMPD cracks down on drinking and driving

Six people spent the night behind bars after being caught on suspicion of drinking and driving.

The EMPD Freeway Unit members were out in full force, on Saturday, between 7pm and 10pm, monitoring drivers on the N17 highway and its off-ramps.

“Six drivers were arrested when they were found to have taken one glass too many,” said Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago, spokesman for the EMPD.

“The six were nabbed for suspicion of drinking and driving thus posing a danger to innocent and law-abiding motorists on top of the Osborn Road bridge just after the N17 east bound exit.”

All six drivers were detained at the Germiston Police Station after being charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

They were expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
