Youth Month celebrations continue

Youngsters were educated and entertained at the Youth Day event held at the Elsburg Library on Thursday.

“Youth discovering their careers in 40 years of educational struggle” was the theme of the Youth Month event held at the Elsburg Library on Thursday.

The event was organised by Konkose and Mpho Tsotetsi in collaboration with the Elsburg Library.

“I realised that most youngsters are not well motivated about reading and improving their lives which is one of the reasons I initiated this event,” said Konkose.

“I hope this event will inspire youngsters to dream and work for success.”

Konkose also emphasised the importance of June 16.

“It also dawned on me that the majority of youth, these days, have forgotten or have no knowledge about the significance of June 16,” he said.

“June 16 is primarily about educational struggle. The youth back then fought for better and equal education for all and that is what I want youngsters to know and appreciate.

“You find people wearing school uniform in commemoration of the day but they have alcohol in their hands, which puts the wrong message across.

“We need to learn to respect the school uniform.”

Among those invited to motivate and educate the audience was Caroline Molomo from Lethubuntu Health Care Services.

Molomo addressed a number of health issues affecting the youth, particularly teenage pregnancy.

“Most teens have sex as a way to seem cool and sophisticated but it often results in teenage pregnancy,” she said.

“We really need to be free and talk to our children about sex and its consequences while they are still young.

“Rather say ‘I spoke to my child but he/she didn’t listen’ than ‘I should’ve advised my child’.

“Young people, let us love ourselves because we are unique and we are the future.”

Molomo also left the youngsters with a sentence to remember.

“Open your ears and close the zip,” she advised.

Special Force Entertainment and Revolution Dancers were among those present entertaining the audience.
