Caring for the environment

LG South Africa collaborated with Germiston South Primary School and Remade Recycling to clean-up the Germiston Lake as part of World Environmental Day.

World Environmental Day (WED) was celebrated globally, last Friday, June 3.

The awareness day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 and is now run by UNEP.

The aim ofit is to raise global awareness and to encourage citizens to take positive environmental action to protect Earth.

The theme for WED this year was “Join the race to make the world a better place”.

With this in mind, LG South Africa used the day to kick-start its global employee volunteer programme, through a collaboration with Germiston South Primary School and Remade Recycling, to help to clean-up the Germiston Lake.

In addition to encouraging its employees to volunteer on the day, LG also encouraged consumers to participate in making the world a better place, by making a difference in their own communities.

“World Environmental Day is an opportunity for everyone to realise the responsibility they have to care for Earth and to become agents of change,” said Liana >Barnard, corporate communications and public relations manager for LG Electronics South Africa.

“We are honoured to be in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme and having WED as a platform to do something positive for the environment.

“It is so important to us to encourage our communities to actively participate in the celebration, as well as becoming an active agent in developing environmental safety measures.”

Remade Recycling, LG’s preferred supplier for recycling and waste management, joined in the day’s activities, sponsoring the collection equipment for the clean-up initiative.

In addition, Remade Recycling assisted in implementing a recycling initiative at the primary school for the month of July, to create additional awareness for the pupils on the importance of taking care of the environment.

“As one of the largest collectors and traders of recyclable material in South Africa, we actively support environmental initiatives, not only to better the communities in which we live, but also to educate people about the importance and benefits of recycling,” said Michella Hattingh, head of marketing and public relations at Remade Recycling.

The companies further encouraged the community to not only think about the environment in June, but throughout the year.
