Students fired up

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) is impressed by the progress made by the students in the fire and emergency services learnership programme.

The fire and emergency services learnership students, appointed in January, have made great strides in their studies so far.

“They have completed most of the modules and are left with only three before they can be taken for experiential learning in different fire stations around the metro,” said the district manager media liaison for Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), William Ntladi.

“All of them are expected to be able to provide risk-based primary emergency care as advanced first responders in the workplace.

“They can also engage in fire safety and public education activities, perform support operations at fire incidents and even perform fire ground operations necessary to ensure life safety, fire control and property conservation under supervision.”

Ntladi added that the modules are of different unit standards.

“The modules are as per different unit standards and NQF levels respectively,” he said.

“The expected duration for the cognitive part is until the end of June. They will then be deployed to fire stations before their final graduations.”
