Metro embarks on R30-m project to manage fuel consumption
An electronic fuel management device will be fitted to all council-owned vehicles.
The metro has introduced new fuel consumption regulatory measures to monitor and control fuelling activities as part of its fleet management strategy.
The electronic fuel management system is being installed in the metro’s vehicles and is set to ensure efficient utilisation of fuel resources.
The fitment process is currently being rolled out to over 4 000 council-owned vehicles, set to be fitted with the device over a multi-year period, through inter-dependent phases.
The process is expected to be completed by June 2017.
The successful implementation of the system will anchor a new era of technological innovation in the management of fuel activities, thus placing the metro on par with industry practices.
The R30-million project is a step in the right direction to instil a sense of accountability on the part of the metro, as well as to instil confidence in the ratepayers.
The first phase of fitment is focusing on departments providing critical services, such as emergency, waste and buses, as well as the EMPD.
