Supporting the victims of crime

The Germiston Victim Support Unit was launched at the Germiston Police Station last Friday.

The victims of crime will no longer feel as though they have fallen through the cracks, due to the formation of the Germiston Victim Support Unit.

The unit was officially launched at the Germiston Police Station, last Friday.

“As we all know, the crime rate is increasing daily,” said Jean Ingram, from the Germiston Victim Support Unit.

“There is a large gap between the police services and the protection of victims of crime, and this is where the Victim Support Unit comes in.”

The unit will offer not only emotional support to the victims, but will also ensure that they are empowered and able to regain their lives after a traumatic incident.

The Germiston Victim Support Unit team is made up of 11 volunteers, who have offered their time and skills to assist victims.

“We will assist victims by being some of the first responders to scenes and also counsel the victim after the incident has taken place.

“Counselling will be conducted at the Victim Support Centre, at the Germiston Police Station,” said Ingram.

The unit relies solely on donations and sponsors from the community to operate.

“If anyone is interested in assisting with sponsorships or in becoming a first responder please contact the unit,” added Ingram.

Ekurhuleni West Cluster police station commander Gen Max Masha wished the team all the best.
