A grade above the rest

Local mixed martial arts academy holds grading.

It was a long, exhausting day for the junior members of Tebbutt’s Mixed Martial Arts Academy on Saturday.

The academy, situated in Hamilton Avenue, Lambton, saw 22 juniors grading to their next belts.

And all 22 were successful.

Hanshi and owner of the academy, Alex Tebbutt said: “We run a very strict grading process.

“The day starts at 6am and runs until 5pm and the members are tested in kata, full-contact fighting, tile breaking and weapons.”

Stamina also plays a big role in the grading and the members’ stamina is tested twice during the course of the grading.

Hanshi Tebbutt said he was extremely proud of the juniors.

“They are all in great form and put in a lot of hard work and training for their grading.”

This weekend sees all the younger members of the academy attending the Clash of the Tiny Titans in Brakpan.

“We will also now start working hard for our overseas competition coming up in June,” hanshi Tebbutt said.
