Leak a threat to Elsburg sub-station

Water pipe bursts in Van Der Merwe Street under sub-station.

At 9am on Wednesday morning residents of Elsburg could not believe that the metro had still not done anything to address a burst water pipe in Van Der Merwe Street.

The pipe, which is located under a sub-station, burst between midnight and 1am, sending a river of water down the road and into the nearby properties.

The leak, more worryingly, had caused a live electrical box to sink into the ground and become submerged in water.

“We woke up one street below, in Nielsen Street, with a river flowing through our property,” said Corné Botha.

Residents throughout the Elsburg neighbourhood called the metro’s call centre.

“Is this the way the metro conduct themselves when there is a crisis?

“Nine hours later and millions of litres of water gone, in a country where there is a water shortage and farmers and animals are dying of thirst,” Botha added.

Several properties in the area were damaged by the flowing water which left many property walls leaning dangerously.

This latest burst pipe comes only a few weeks after a pipe was repaired in Yorke Street, a stone’s throw from the current problem area.

Residents in the area told the GCN on Thursday that the metro had come out to the scene but had done a poor job of repairing the pipe.

“A large hole has just been left open with the electrical box pushed aside,” Botha said.

The GCN contacted the metro to get comment on the matter, however, no comment was received.
