Metro employee lands pal in hot water over use of vehicle

A metro employee will face disciplinary action after allowing his friend to use a council-owned car.

A metro employee and his pal have landed in hot water after their actions were monitored by the EMPD.

An official white, unmarked VW Golf issued to the metro customer relations management employee, who is based in Alberton, was confiscated by EMPD Community Liaison Unit members at 11.30am, on Wednesday.

The person found driving the vehicle claimed that he was the employee’s friend.

The employee was picked up from his home and he and his pal were taken to the Germiston Police Station for questioning.

“Following information received about the employee’s abuse of the council vehicle, the EMPD monitored the vehicle for a period of a week,” said Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago, spokesman for the EMPD.

“Armed with the evidence of the abuse of the vehicle, the metro police closed in on the vehicle at the intersection of Osborn and Van Dyk roads, in Wadeville, on Wednesday.”

The driver, who was not supposed to be behind the wheel of the council-owned vehicle, claimed that the employee had asked him to drive to a garage to check the tyre pressure of the Golf.

“It also emerged that the tracker system fitted in the VW Golf had been interfered with and was not functioning the way it should,” Kgasago said.

“The matter was registered at the Germiston Police Station in order to officially obtain solemn declarations from both the employee and his friend.

“A disciplinary process is expected to be initiated against the employee,” Kgasago said.
