More speeding motorists arrested

EMPD officers have been targeting speedsters on the city’s highways.

A speed law enforcement operation on the N3 northbound, just before the Geldenhuys Interchange, on Sunday, netted 11 drivers for excessive speeding on this 120km/h zone stretch of the highway.

One 23-year-old male driver, in a BMW sedan, was clocked at 197km/h and was also charged for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Among the arrested drivers was a 34-year-old woman, also in a BMW sedan, nabbed for the second time this year for doing 162km/h.

The rest of the speedsters arrested recorded speeds of between and 161km/h and 178km/h, and cited a variety of reasons for breaking the law.

Late for work, late for a flight or rushing home were the reasons advanced by the offenders.

All the arrested drivers were charged with reckless and negligent driving at the Germiston Police Station.

They were all released after posting bail of R1 000 each and were due to appear in court on April 4.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, on the N17 highway westbound, near the Heidelberg Road bridge, three drivers were arrested for exceeding the speed limit of 120km/h.

They included a 49-year-old male taxi driver in a Toyota minibus, caught at 5.38am, travelling at 149km/h.

The other two were a 25-year-old man in a Ford sedan, nabbed doing 172km/h and claiming he was on his way to a funeral, and a 60-year-old man in an Audi SUV, caught doing 171km/h.

All three drivers were charged at the Elsburg Police Station, with reckless and negligent driving, and later released after posting R1 500 bail each.

They were expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrates Court on April 4.
