GCN recognised at award ceremony

The GCN was named as one of the four finalists in the best free newspaper pagination less than 20 category at the 27th Annual Caxton Excellence Awards.

The “Fantastically” themed 27th Annual Caxton Excellence Awards were held at the Johannesburg Theatre, on Thursday, March 17.

The evening was MCed by Sharlene Surtie Richards and saw performances from SAMA winners Nathi and Desmond and the Tutus, as well as acrobatic performers, contortionists and aerial dancers.

Among the awards given out on the evening the GCN was named as one of the four finalists in the best free newspaper pagination less than 20 category.

The GCN’s sister paper Southern Courier was also nominated in the best free newspaper pagination more than 20 category, while Joburg East/South branch’s Louis van Niekerk won Ad Designer of the Year and Joburg South’s Elizabeth Madonsela walked away as Switchboard Operator of the Year.

The GCN team, editor Melissa Hart, senior journalist Leigh Hodgson, sports journalist Puleng Sekabate and property advertising consultant Adellé Boshoff were at the event to celebrate the paper’s achievement with all the other winners and nominees.

Other awards on the evening included:

  • Best Portrait Photograph – Hugo Redelinghuys from George Herald
  • Best Feature Photograph – Amy Jenkins from Zululand Observer
  • Best Hard News Photograph – Jannie du Plessis from Vaalweekblad
  • Best Sport Photograph – Hugo Redelinghuys from George Herald
  • Photographer of the Year – Jannie du Plessis from Vaalweekblad
  • Most Promising Newspaper Journalist of the Year – Kristian Meijer from Rekord Pretoria
  • Multimedia Storyteller of the Year – Zsaraeva Nel and Gerhard Rheeder from Middelburg Observer
  • Get It Journalist of the Year – Genevieve Beyleveld from Get It Joburg North
  • Newspaper Journalist of the Year – Daleen Naudé from Middelburg Observer
