CGA athletes are getting better and better

The CGA field league meetings are preparing athletes for the Provincial Championships in March.

Saturday was filled with activities as Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) hosted a track and field league meeting at the Germiston Stadium.

This was the second last league meeting before the CGA Provincial Championships, in March.

The meeting featured the Phalula twins, who have moved on to longer distances on the track from their previous main events, which included 800m and 1 500m distances.

Lebo-Diana Phalula led the 5 000m women’s event by 300m, finishing her race in a time of 16:47:85.

Keneilwe Sesing came in second, in a time of 17:37:63.

Returning from an injury, Lebogang Phalula finished third in a time of 17:56:43.

In the men’s 5 000m, Namaqua Nkhasi, of Cool Running AC, came first in a time of 14:02:47, followed by Joel Marome, of Nedbank, in a time of 14:17:29.

Gladwin Mzazi finished third in a time of 14:23:79.

On the same day as the league meeting, CGA also had a team participating at the SA Marathon Championships in Buffalo City, East London.

In the open men’s category, Ntsindiso Mphakathi finished third with a time of 02:23:12.

In the open women’s category, Mapaseka Makhanya finished second in a time of 02:51:32.

Overall, the CGA men’s team walked away with the gold title and the women with the silver title.

CGA also congratulated Lebogang Shange on breaking his own record for the 20km race in the time of 01:20:06, which took place on February 20, in Australia, as well as Sibusiso Nzima for finishing fourth, clocking his new personal best time of 02:11:42 and bettering his Olympic qualification time.
