Gruelling two-day race

Preparation for the world’s toughest canoe race, the FNB Dusi, continues.

Canoeists faced a gruelling two-day challenge when they took to the water for the Klip River Race, recently.

The race was the penultimate river race in Gauteng, prior to the FNB Dusi, and offered participants an important training opportunity.

The race provided tough, challenging, demanding and exhausting technical stretches, numerous obstacles to climb in and out or around of, some awesome rapids with massive stopper waves and huge drops and holes that swallowed paddlers whole, all on top of a long distance and flat gruelling slog.

A number of paddlers from Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and the Cape participated in the event as their own rivers have been dry due to drought conditions.

Despite the rough and turbulent waters Germiston-based Bobby Damalis and Daniel Stevens enjoyed the training race and finished in a time of seven hours and 31 minutes.

The men are members of the Victoria Lake Canoe Club, located at the Germiston Lake, the host for the final training race before the FNB Dusi.

The race will take place on February 9 at 6.30pm.
