Athletics season is on track

Central Gauteng Athletics held its third league meeting of the year, recently.

Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) hosted the third league meeting of the year, last Saturday, at Germiston Stadium.

This puts the province halfway through the season.

With just two more league meetings to go before the provincial and national championships the season has gained momentum.

“We had a great turnout of spectators with the grandstands filled to witness all the action,” said Mbalenhle Ngema from CGA.

In one of the highlights of the meeting the Athletics South Africa sanctioned 5 000m event for junior women (in preparation for choosing the CAA cross country team) saw the race being led by a bunch from the KPMG Athletics Club.

“The race had an interesting finish as it was a close call for officials to decide between Simonay Weitsz (KPMG) and Keletso Senosi (Tuks), who is also a CGA product.

“The race was awarded to Weitsz in a time of 17:34:3 with Senosi taking second in a time of 17:34:5.

“The trials were aimed at evaluating the junior women’s fitness as they prepare for the CAA championships in Cameroon at the beginning of March,” Ngema said.

The highly anticipated 10 000m men’s race saw Sibusiso Nzima (Nedbank) walking away victorious in a time of 28:48, shocking the crowd with a world class performance.

Onneile Dintwe (Nedbank) took the women’s event in 34:51, and she was very impressed with her time as she aims to qualify for the Rio Olympics.

“It is do or die time for athletes as we get closer to the national championships.

“They need to have participated in at least two provincial leagues and the CGA championships to qualify for selection.

“Some have met the selection criteria, and some still need the two remaining league meetings to achieve their goal and meet the criteria,” Ngema said.
