Sporting highlights for July and August 2015

A quick look at some of 2015’s sporting thrills.

Take a look at what 2015 had in store for our local sports men, women and clubs in July and August.

July:

  • VLC’s u-14 Jaemi Wellish, from St Catherine’s School, received a silver medal and points for her school, at the Gauteng Canoe Union School League winter race.
  • Mark Strydom SA JKA Karate Centre’s instructor, Mark Strydom, placed first in the Elite Kumite section at the SA JKA Karate National Tournament. He was rewarded with a trophy and a gold medal.
  • Two members from the Elsburg Wrestling Club, Jacques Kriel and Casey van Baalen, each received a silver medal at the Continental Championships held in Egypt.
  • Five members from the Germiston Karate Centre took part in the JSKA National Championships and managed to scoop 10 medals in kumite and kata sections respectively.
  • A new boxing academy, the Elsburg Boxing Academy, was established.
  • Germiston Tennis Club was relaunched for all intermediate and advanced players.

August:

  • South African women’s hockey player and general manager of the Investec Hockey Academy, Shelley Russell, along with many other hockey icons, shared their knowledge and expertise at the hockey courses held at St Mary’s School, in Johannesburg.
  • Kaizen Judo Club members achieved four medals at the South African Judo Open Championships, held in Stellenbosch.
  • Gerdview boxer Grant Fourie (32) recently claimed the South African junior welterweight championship title. This was after his 12-round fight against Warren Joubert, at the Young Guns Box and Dine tournament, at Emperors Palace.
  • The East Rand Veterans Boxing Association (ERVBA), established in 1989, celebrated its 26th year in existence, at the Primrose Bowling Club.
