High-paced aerobics session at Germiston Lake

Marathon sees 800 participants gather at Germiston Lake for an intense eight-hour long aerobics session.

Fitness, endurance and stamina were tested at the Ekurhuleni Fit for Free Aerobics Marathon, at Germiston Lake, on Saturday.

The event was the conclusion of the eight-month Ekurhuleni Aerobics Marathon series, which commenced in April and took place on Saturday mornings, throughout Ekurhuleni.

“We, as the metro, seek to promote social cohesion, while addressing the serious issue of healthy living among our citizens, encouraging them to improve their health status,” said metro spokesman Themba Gadebe.

A 5km fun walk kick-started the day’s event, which also served as a warm-up to the intense, but fun, marathon.

The intense sessions were led by qualified gym instructors.

Among the passionate and dedicated instructors was Nomsa Mokoena.

“I joined the marathon movement five years ago and I am loving every minute of it,” she said.

“I love being an instructor, I have been a sports person since primary school, where, among other sports, I took part in rugby and basketball.

“I commend the metro for this initiative, as it shows and promotes the importance of exercising.

“Most people think about running when they hear the word marathon, but this is a fun workout programme filled with lots of different exercises.

“I lead different sessions throughout Ekurhuleni and one thing I have noticed is that people are falling in love with the marathon; they are having fun in the name of fitness.

“This is fun, just three hours every Saturday of fun and health, it really is worth it.”

Metro buses collected participants from across Ekurhuleni to join the Germiston community in the final eight-hour long aerobics marathon, all in the name of alleviating disease, stress and obesity.
