Infrastructure to blame for water leak

Metro responds to the water leak on the corner of Voortrekker and Meyer streets, in Germiston.

The GCN received a query regarding a water leak on the corner of Voortrekker and Meyer streets, recently.

“This is a major concern considering the current national water crisis,” Maria Homem told the GCN.

“What worries me even more is that it has been leaking for months and I have reported the matter to the metro more than once, but the leak persists.

“We have to abide with the water restrictions, due to the water shortage, but the metro can’t attend to something as serious as a water leak.

“This is unacceptable.”

According to the metro, infrastructure is to be blamed for the water leak.

“The water leak at the corner of Voortrekker and Meyer streets was caused by the ageing infrastructure, but it has been attended to,” said metro spokesman Themba Gadebe.

“As part of the urban renewal programme, the metro is replacing the water reticulation network in the Germiston CBD, to curb water losses and the frequency of pipe failures.”
