Hijacked man allegedly tortured for bank pin code

The Germiston police are currently searching for three suspects involved in a hijacking.

The Germiston police are currently investigating a case with multiple charges, including the hijacking of a motor vehicle and possession of a hijacked motor vehicle.

The case was opened after a 21-year-old man was threatened with a firearm in Knox Street, in the Germiston CBD, at about 11.10pm, recently.

“The complainant alleged that he was waiting for the traffic light to change when he was suddenly accosted by a man who pointed a firearm at him,” said WO Mduduzi Nhlabathi, communications officer for the Germiston cluster police.

“Another three thugs, wielding knives, jumped into his car.

“They shoved him into the back of his Mini Cooper and took control of it.

“The suspects then covered his head and face with a T-shirt and instructed him to look down at all times, while they drove off with him.”

As they drove they robbed him of his wallet, which contained bank cards and other debit cards.

“When they reached somewhere in Zonkizizwe, the complainant was allegedly tortured to give his pin code, and he complied.

“An undisclosed amount of money was then withdrawn from his two accounts, he was dropped off in Zonkizizwe and the criminals drove off in his car,” said Nhlabathi.

The Germiston SAPS task team received information about the hijacking in Knox Street, interviewed some informers and it was indicated that the car had been spotted in the Katlehong area.

The leads were followed and the vehicle was recovered in Katlehong, while a suspect in his 30s was arrested for possession of a hijacked motor vehicle.

“As the investigation unfolded, two women were positively linked to the plot of hijacking and robbery and they were also arrested.

“The Germiston police are still looking for the other three suspects who were involved in the commission of these crimes and are following all leads,” said Nhlabathi.

The arrested people were due to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court, last Monday.

Germiston police cluster commander Brig Phumla Mdlankomo commended the members who were involved in this success and encouraged community members to continue working hand-in-glove with the police, not only in the Germiston cluster, but in all communities.
