New chief of police takes his oath

Metro has a new man at the head of the EMPD.

Bafana Andries Mahlabe was sworn in as chief of police for Ekurhuleni in an inauguration ceremony held at the Germiston Civic Centre, last Thursday.

This comes a week after the executive mayor of Ekurhuleni, Clr Mondli Gungubele, announced the appointment of Mahlabe in a press briefing.

“It has taken us over a year to fill this position because we were looking for the most relevant person, a person who understands the dynamics of the city and has a clear vision of how to win the battle against crime,” Gungubele told members of the press at the briefing.

Lieut-Gen Lesetja Mothiba, the Gauteng police commissioner, conducted the inauguration ceremony and asked Mahlabe to repeat the oath as he read it.

The new chief of police then signed the oath of office, confirming his commitment to serve the residents of the metro.

In his acceptance speech, Mahlabe invited residents of the metro to judge him on his work.

“I’m taking back the streets of the metro and will leave no stone unturned,” he said.

“Operation Bumper to Bumper starts now.”

The ceremony came to a close after Mahlabe’s first parade inspection as chief of police.
