Men nabbed for assault and impersonating officers

Man allegedly beaten by patrollers.

A man was allegedly attacked by two men in Oak Avenue, recently.

“The complainant alleged that he was driving along Oak Avenue when a white sedan stopped in front of him.

“The vehicle’s occupants, believed to be community patrollers, got out and approached his car,” explained Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

One of the men opened the victim’s car door, switched off the engine, and removed the key from the ignition.

“It is alleged that the victim was pulled from the car and choked with a stick, and his hands were tied together with a cable tie,” said Maome.

The men kicked the complainant in the face and ordered him to face the ground and not to look at them.

“The victim claims that they were joined by another car, whose occupants started to search his car,” Maome continued.

Police were called to the scene by the patrollers after the attack.

When they arrived they freed the victim, who immediately went to the Primrose Police Station to open a case against the men.

Two men were traced using the brief description given by the victim.

The 24-year-old and 53-year-old were arrested and charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and impersonating a police officer.

“We appeal to the community patrollers to act within the law when they execute their duties.

“Only trained police officials can stop and search a vehicle,” warned Maome.

The men have since appeared in the Germiston Magistrates Court, where their case was postponed for trial.
