All about the Rest-a-While Community Centre for the Aged

Important information about the Rest-a-While Community Centre for the Aged.

The Rest-a-While Community Centre for the Aged has been serving the elderly in Germiston for almost 50 years.

It got its start when a group of lonely and retired women started playing cards together.

They came together once a week and played cards and games over a cup of tea and discussed the possibility of expanding the group to include more people.

The founders did some research and soon discovered that there was a great need for a group like this in the community of Germiston.

Knowing their homes would not be ideal to accommodate the growing number members, they approached the local welfare organisations and churches in the area which represented the elderly in the community of Germiston, as well as the Germiston city council.

The council assisted the group in obtaining the centre’s first premises on the corner of Queen and Cross streets in Germiston, at a nominal fee.

The Rest-a-While Community Centre for the Aged had its first official minuted meeting on May 3, 1966 and was registered with the Department of Health and Welfare on October 17, 1969.

The organisation moved to its current premises in Primrose on June 8, 1979.

The centre will be celebrating its 50th birthday in September 2016.

The main aim of the centre is to ensure that the elderly of Primrose and surrounding areas have the opportunity to have a well-balanced home cooked meal, Monday to Friday.

These meals can been organised as a take-away or delivered to a pensioner’s home.

In addition to this, the centre offers interactive programmes for the elderly.

Activities include visits from musicians, bingo, morning prayer groups and church services, line dancing classes and walks.

The Rest-a-While Community Centre for the Aged encourages the elderly of Primrose to come to the centre and get involved and meet new friends.
