Local company lost without phone lines

Metro not responsible for CBD phone lines.

The GCN has received a complaint from a company located in President Street in the Germiston CBD.

The company has been struggling with the continuous damage to their phone lines by the construction currently taking place in the CBD.

It has contacted Telkom, who informed them that the problems will continue because the Ekurhuleni Metro’s contractors continue to damage the cables.

A staff member explained how the company has started to lose business as people cannot reach the company.

The company is unsure about their future.

The GCN sent a query to the metro to find out who the company can contact about this on-going problem and what steps can be taken to protect the phone lines and other cabling in the CBD during the on-going works.

The metro’s spokesman, Themba Gadebe, responded with the following statement:

“Telkom have recently lost cables in and around Germiston, as a result of thieves stealing a lot of cables.

“Their manholes where broken into and a lot of cables were stolen.

“We are constantly coming across a lot of other services and to single out Telkom would be maliciously careless and even so to make that accusation.

“The unfortunate thing is cables are stolen on or near where the contractor is working.

“Any service which is broken by the contractor is reported and fixed promptly.”
