One dead and fifteen injured in N3 accident

Minibus catches fire following mechanical failure.

The GCN has received reports of an accident on the N3, South bound, before the Heidelberg Road off ramp.

William Ntladi, media liaison officer for the Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services, confirmed that the accident, which involved a minibus, was caused by mechanical failure.

“The minibus caught fire injuring 16 people, including the driver.

“A woman was declared dead on scene after fire fighters had to use extinguishers on her when her clothes caught fire.

“Three more passengers suffered critical injuries.

“Seven were treated for serious injuries with the remaining five occupants, which included the minibus’ driver being treated for minor injuries,” he said.  

The injured were taken to local hospitals for treatment.

The N3 remains closed, more details and photos to follow.
