Primrose fighter claims title

Grant Fourie is the new South African junior welterweight champion.

African Ring, in association with Golden Gloves, Emperors Palace, Supersport and Chesa Nyama, presented the Young Guns Box and Dine tournament, on Thursday, at Emperors Palace.

Fight fans witnessed five impressive bouts.

Primrose’s Grant Fourie took to the ring against Warren Joubert, who was defending his South African junior welterweight championship title.

The 12-round bout was filled with action and adrenaline.

It was evident in the first round that both fighters are skilled, with firm and well calculated punches.

Joubert seemed to be strong in the second round, but it was still early stages as Fourie kept going strongly.

By the third round Fourie had picked up and got in a few great shots.

From the fourth round Joubert was more energetic and charging at the beginning of every round, but that was short-lived, as Fourie had his way of taming his opponent’s hype.

He brought Joubert down to one knee, which really excited the crowd.

Joubert seemed to be slowing down after the fall, while Fourie was more amped up.

Fourie had seemingly studied his opponent, as he knew when to launch firm accurate jabs and when to duck, while Joubert seemed to struggle to study Fourie’s way of fighting.

Round 11 was an intense period, with boxing fans witnessing accurate and impressive throws from both fighters.

The last round was also intense, as both fighters tried to score last-minute points before the end of the bout.

It was a brilliant fight to watch.

It went the full distance and the judges scored the fighters 117-111; 116-110 and 114-112, all in favour of the new South African junior welterweight champion, Fourie.
