Elsburg police issue safety tips to the community

Take heed of these safety tips.

The Elsburg SAPS have issued a number of safety tips for the community to follow, after several incidents of crime in their policing area.

Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for the Elsburg SAPS, said most of the incidents are occurring in Wadeville.

Take these precautions to prevent hijackings:

  • Beware of hijackings in your drive-way.
  • Ensure that you are not followed by suspicious vehicles.
  • Beware of people pretending to be buying houses, as they are intending to rob your house.
  • Watch out for suspicious-looking vehicles and people in your street, call the police immediately.
  • Do not leave gates and doors open.
  • Install burglar proofing in front of windows, as criminals break windows and steal the stuff inside.

Tips to prevent aggravated robbery, robbery with a weapon and common robbery:

  • Avoid carrying large sums of money.
  • Avoid deserted areas late at night.
  • Look around for any suspicious-looking people or motor vehicles and run for safety.
  • Always close windows and lock doors while driving at night.
  • Before opening gates and doors at home ensure that you have not been followed.
  • Have police emergency numbers on your cellphone.
  • Avoid unnecessary arguments and aggression with your attacker, which could result in injury or death.

Tips to prevent the theft of a motor vehicle and theft out of a motor vehicle:

  • Ensure that your motor vehicle is locked properly and windows are properly closed and that there are no people using a jamming device and gate remotes which can stop your car from locking.
  • Ensure that your car is locked by testing if the doors are locked physically after locking by remote.
  • Avoid deserted parking areas.
  • Ask car guards to keep an eye on your vehicle while you are away.
  • Vehicles with an alarm system, gear lock or anti-hijacking system are not easily stolen.
  • If possible check your car every hour to ensure that it is still where you parked it.
  • Ensure that laptops, cellphones and loose valuable items are safely locked away in the boot or another safe place.
  • Report any suspicious movement around the vehicle in the parking lot to the police, via the police sector vehicle cellphone numbers.
