Senior tennis club relaunched

Keep fit and join the Germiston Tennis Club.

The recently relaunched Germiston Tennis Club invite all intermediate and advanced players to join their ranks.

According to the president, Loyiso Matsha, the club existed in the ’70s and ’80s, but became non-operational over the years.

“The club died out because most of the members went into retirement,” said Matsha.

“Juniors above 12 years, who know the basics of tennis and are interested in playing club tennis are most welcome to join.”

According to Matsha, a former South African u-18 boys’ singles and doubles tennis champion in 1976, 1977 and 1978, the aim of the club’s resuscitation is to encourage good health habits.

“We want to promote fitness, social interaction and invite people to spend their free time fruitfully,” he said.

“We have to utilise the wonderful resources supplied by the metro, such as the tennis courts.”

Matsha also explained that the club is currently focused on growth.

“We are making it known to the community that the club is in full operation mode and, if at the end of the year we have 10 members and more, we will consider taking part in leagues and tournaments,” he added.

“At the moment the club has six members and practises take place every Tuesday from 5pm to 6pm and on Saturday from 8.30am to 10pm.

“Players are welcome to stay and practise afterwards.

“There are eight tennis courts at the disposal of club members, two of which have recently been resurfaced.”

There is a junior tennis academy, the Ekurhuleni Tennis School of Excellence (ETSOE), at the same venue, which runs separately, but in collaboration with the club.

“Once the juniors from ETSOE have reached maturity in terms of performance, they will be encouraged to join the senior club,” explained Matsha.

“People who are keen to join the club and have no tennis experience are also welcome.
