Peter de la Rey, from Malvern East, is a local drag racer who is making waves in the Superbike Eliminator division of the South African National Drag Racing Championships.
“This is an eight-round series; the first round was held on March 21,” said de la Rey.
“I had a clutch problem in the first round and came fourth, but I recovered by winning the two races that followed, which put me in the lead.
“The most recent round was on July 5, at the Nitro Raceway, in Brakpan, and although I had a few glitches I still managed to come second.”
The local drag racer also said he is using his 2012 BMW S1000RR superbike to race.
“The old bike has been perfect and, although I have received a new 2015 model, it is still under development and I am awaiting some suspension parts from the United States of America,” explained de la Rey.
“I don’t want to mess with a good combination at this stage, as we are in the middle of the season and it is critical for me to keep focus.
“Fortunately, I am not under pressure to use my new bike too soon and will use it only when I am 100 per cent happy and confident on it.
“My most important rounds are in September and October, so I would like to keep the momentum going.”
