First place for local sensei

Local karate club receives great representation.

Mark Strydom SA JKA Karate Centre’s instructor, Mark Strydom, participated in the SA JKA Karate National Tournament, at the Standard Bank Arena, in Johannesburg, recently.

“There were SA JKA karate clubs from as far afield as Cape Town, Pretoria and Pietermaritzburg, competing at the tournament,” he said.

Strydom was placed first in the Elite Kumite section and was rewarded with a trophy and a gold medal.

The local sensei also told the GCN that he has been doing karate for over three decades.

“I started karate in 1980 and have been going at it ever since, I am currently on my fifth Dan and will be grading to my sixth in September, at the All African Championships,” he said.

The local club, situated in Wychwood, is open to people interested in joining.

“More people are welcome to join the club, we train every Monday and Wednesday,” said Strydom.

“Our training sessions are split in two, the juniors practise from 5.30pm until 6.15pm, followed by the seniors from 6.15pm to 7.15pm.”
