Two wins for local rugby club

Simmer’s victorious weekend.

The Germiston Simmer Rugby Club visited the Krugersdorp High Old Scholar’s Association (KHOSA) on May 29.

Simmer’s u-20’s team, as well as the first and second teams played against KHOSA’s teams.

“The u-20’s game was tense and Simmer scored five unanswered tries before the referee decided to end the game due to ill-discipline,” said the local club’s Ryan Dennis.

“The Man of the Match in the u-20’s game was Shaun Nell, who scored three tries, while Tarquin van der Westhuizen scored two tries.

“Even though the match was stopped, it was declared a 25-3 win to Simmer, as the match was almost over.”

The second team played a hard game and the score was tied in the 70th minute; Simmer got a penalty and Marcus Coetzee put it over for a 15-12 lead.

“The team, however, lost the game 15-17,” Dennis said.

”The try-scorers for Simmer were Armand van Dyk and Morena Ntema.”

The first team played an expansive game that saw them lead 12-3 in the 30th minute.

“Things changed as the KHOSA fly-half kept his team on the score sheet by putting over four penalties, thereby tying the scores going into half-time,” said Dennis.

“KHOSA scored in the second half, but the Simmer boys replied with a try through Anton Vlok in the dying minutes of the game.”

The final score was 25-19, in favour of Simmer.

Louis Britz was Man of the Match and the tries were scored by Ferdi Coetzer, Eric de Beer and Vlok.

“We visited KHOSA last year, as well, and came back with three losses, but it was different this time as, among other things, our u-20 team’s win was a first against them ever,” explained Dennis.

“The first team’s win was the second win against KHOSA.

“The weekend was a success for Simmer, even though the second team came away with only a bonus point.”
