Man arrested for 2014 hijacking

Stolen cellphone leads officers to hijacker.

After months of investigations, the Primrose police have arrested a 35-year-old man for a September 2014 hijacking.

The hijacking took place in Wychwood, when the victim was in his driveway.

“He noticed a silver Volkswagen polo stopping behind his car.

“Three men, all armed with firearms, demanded his car keys,” explained communications officer for the Primrose police, Sgt Styles Maome.

Two cellphones were also taken during the hijacking and, by using the International Mobile Station Equipment Identity (IMEI) number of one of the stolen cellphones, the detectives were able to trace the accused.

“When phoning the number it was answered by a female who informed the police that she worked in Kempton Park,” said Maome.

Officers travelled to Kempton Park to meet with the woman, who told police she had lent the cellphone from her boyfriend.

She gave officers her boyfriend’s Katlehong address, which coincided with the address where the stolen vehicle’s tracker lost signal.

The suspect was arrested and appeared in the Germiston Magistrates Court where his case was postponed trial.

The accused will remain in custody until his next court appearance.
