Metro to host Career Expo and Job Summit

Metro looks at finding solutions to unemployment.

The Ekurhuleni Career Expo and Job Summit, now in its fourth year, has become an eye-opener to the harsh reality of unemployment with which many young people are confronted.

In a bid to reduce its 28 per cent unemployment rate, the metro will host a two-day Career Expo on June 9 and 10 (from 8am to 4.30pm), at the Alberton Civic Centre, followed by a Job Summit on June 11 (from 9am to 4pm) at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre, in Boksburg.

The three-day interactive programme will provide young people with an opportunity to interact with various companies that will be exhibiting.

There will also be an opportunity to register their CVs on the Ekurhuleni unemployed youth database.

The database is currently used by the municipality to assist unemployed graduates by placing them in youth work readiness placement programmes and other skills development and related entrepreneurship development programmes.

Career advisory services and a computer lab with internet connection, for those who do not have access to resources to develop their CVs, are among the facilities that will be provided at the free Career Expo.

Stakeholders with whom the municipality has partnered will present their skills development and training opportunities, including bursaries and learnership programmes, at the Career Expo.

Job creation, business opportunities in Ekurhuleni, improving and up-scaling initiatives for youth employment and enhancing job creation are among the topics speakers will address at the Job Summit.

“The Career Expo and Job Summit will again bring civil society, business leaders and academics together in mapping a way forward on how to address the challenges of unemployment and low skills levels with which the youth of Ekurhuleni is faced,” said metro spokesman Themba Gadebe.

The event will end with a gala dinner at the Birchwood Hotel, where certificates will be awarded in recognition of the companies that have been involved in community development projects.

Residents are encouraged to bring along their CVs and can visit their nearest Customer Care Centre to book for free transport to the Career Expo.
