Football fever in Germiston

Germiston City FC's u-15 team faced Benoni Northerns FC during their Super League fixture.

The Germiston City Sports Club was set abuzz with football action on Sunday.

“These are the central selections for the Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) League’s provincial side, and we were hosting the u-15s,” said the communications officer at the Germiston City Football Club, Pieter Oliver.

“The teams we hosted were Germiston City, Luso Africa, Birch Acres, Benoni Northerns, Robertsham Callies, Old Parks, Florida Abion and BCC.

“The teams had double the pressure as, although they were trying out for Easterns, the games used for the trials were full on league games.”

The players had to play to impress and to win in order to better their standings on the Super League log.

While some teams were winning and others losing on the other fields, Germiston City FC faced Benoni Northerns.

A case of nerves seemed to be the order of the day for both teams and this was made evident by the players’ performance throughout the fixture.

Although Germiston had ball possession, Benoni dominated shots on target.

Germiston’s two goals by Sabata Dikgale and Alan Alho were overthrown by Benoni’s four goals that ensured them a win.

“The boys’ performance was not bad, the team was started this year and I believe they are still gelling to each other’s skills,” said Wiseman Luthuli, Germiston’s u-15 coach.

“It is not a justification for the loss, there were mistakes here and there, we have to go back to the drawing board and the gym and work on them.

“We have an away game this Saturday. We will be playing against Birch Acres, which might be a tough one, but I believe we have what it takes to bag it.”

“Luso Africa FC drew 1-1 with BCC FC, Robertsham Callies FC lost 2-5 to Old Parks FC, and Birch Acres FC won 8-1 to Florida Abion FC,” said Oliver.

In other news, Germiston City FC’s first and reserves teams played against Kempton Park FC on Saturday, the first team lost 1-0 while the reserves drew 2-2.
