Police officer shot by rifle-wielding robber

Thinking they are going to be caught robbers shoot police officer.

An Elsburg police officer, Const Victor Netshidivhe, is recovering in hospital after being shot.

The shooting took place at about 7.17pm on Sunday evening, at the Rondebult Supermarket, in Heidelberg Road, Rondebult.

The suspects, of which there are believed to be four, opened fire on the Elsburg SAPS police vehicle with a rifle.

“The police were out patrolling and went to the shopping centre,” said Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for the Elsburg SAPS.

“Thinking the police were responding to the complaint of business robbery, the suspects opened fire on them.”

Netshidivhe was shot in his lower body and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Cases of attempted murder and business robbery have been opened.

The four suspects are still at large and anyone with information can contact the Elsburg SAPS Station Commander Col Veeshani Arikum on 011 827-2060.
