Top positions for local karate club

Karate club on the rise.

Members of the Shorin-Kempo Kaikan Karate Club, in Katlehong, attended the Shinkyokushin Karate Tournament, in Krugersdorp, recently.

“We registered four participants at the tournament, which was organised by the Shinkyokushin Karate Federation,” said the local club’s chief instructor, Thulane Sibisi.

Tumelo Tsotetsi, Mbali Msomi, Teboho Motloung and Keke Nkopane were the four members who represented their club at the event.

“We were excited when we received an invitation to the annual tournament, but even more thrilled that we managed to scoop three top positions,” said Sibisi.

“Tsotetsi was placed second in the boys’ u-55kg division, Msomi placed third in the women’s open division, while Motloung placed fourth in the boys’ 55kg division.

“Only the top four positions are awarded prizes, but we are also very proud of Nkopane, who placed fifth in the girl’s 55kg division; she worked really hard.

“It was a tough tournament, with over 200 participants.”

Sibisi said the club is proud of all the members who took part in the tournament.

“We are proud of all the members, irrespective of positions,” he added.

“I would also like to congratulate Tsotetsi, he represented the dojo with pride and managed to get second position in the tough boys’ u-55kg division, which had 32 participants.”

Sibisi added that there is still room for improvement.

“Although we are happy with the results, we have to continue training hard for upcoming tournaments,” he said.

“We also picked up, at the tournament, that full-contact karate is growing, which is rather interesting.”
