Two adults and 16 children taken to hospital following accident

Children injured in Leondale accident.

Sixteen children were injured when two bakkies collided in Leondale, Germiston, on Tuesday morning.

The collision took place at the intersection of Bushbuck and Agapantus streets.

“We received a call at 7.30am this morning and rushed to the scene,” said William Ntladi, media liaison officer for the Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS).

“The one bakkie was transporting 16 children, aged between six months and five years old.

“All 16 children, and the drivers of each vehicle, were taken to hospital where they will be treated.

“Five of the children were in a serious but stable condition, while the rest only sustained minor injuries.”

Patients were taken by ambulance to the Natalspruit Hospital, Tambo Memorial Hospital and the Sunward Park Hospital.

“The incident will be investigated by the EMPD and local SAPS,” said Ntladi.
