Quick reaction leads to arrest

Elsburg SAPS nab man for theft and possession of suspected stolen property.

While patrolling in Dekema Road, Wadeville, on Saturday, members of the Elsburg SAPS noticed two men carrying a blue tarpaulin (sail) truck cover at about 11.45am.

When the men saw the officers, they dropped their cargo and fled in the direction of Lantern Road.

One of the officers ran after them and managed to apprehend one of the men at the corner of Dekema and Lantern roads.

“The dedicated police officer took the suspect back to the scene of the crime where he found his colleague with the owner of the truck cover,” said Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for the Elsburg SAPS.

“The complainant alleged that he had parked his truck, with the cover on the back of it, and gone into the shops to buy food.

“When he came back he checked in the back of the truck and noticed that the cover was missing.”

As he was about to go to report the matter, he noticed the police vehicle and decided to report the matter to the officers.

The suspect (25) was arrested and detained at the Elsburg Police Station.

He is due to appear in the Germiston Magistrates Court soon to face charges of possession of suspected stolen property and theft.
