At 9.40am,on Tuesday, a lone EMPD Germiston Crime Prevention Unit member stopped a suspicious-looking VW panel van in Germiston.

After stopping the vehicle, he discovered the van was transporting a cargo of 1 152 fake Adidas tracksuits valued at more than R1-million.

“After following the VW panel van for a few hundred metres, the metro police officer heeded his instincts and closed in,” said spokesman for the EMPD Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago.

“He stopped the vehicle in Jack Street, between Jonas and Refinery roads.

“The dubious documentation provided by the driver made the officer decide to search the vehicle.”

Sixteen containers, each containing 72 replica Adidas tracksuits were uncovered.

“Priced at R1 000 a tracksuit, the total monetary value of the tracksuits was computed to be R1.2millon,” Kgasago said.

The suspect tried to bribe his way out of the arrest by offering the officer R1 300 in cash.

However, the officer arrested the 28-year-old man and he was charged with being in possession of counterfeit goods, and bribery.

He is expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrates Court soon.
