Local dancers showcase their talent

Young Germiston dancers are dancing their way to the top.

Dancers from across the country flocked to compete in the Supreme Dancer of the Year competition, last weekend.

The competition, organised by Diana Moore Dance World, in Lambton, was held at the Alberton Civic Centre and drew over 600 entries.

This was the 30th anniversary of the competition.

Competitors took part in various disciplines, from hip hop and slowdance to Latin American and ballroom.

Two dancers from Diana Moore Dance World excelled at the competition.

Zandri Swanepoel was the winner of the 12-13 Rising Star Slowdance section.

Thirty-four dancers competed for this title.

She also competed in the Freestyle Solo Championship section, where she placed fourth.

Zandri, a Grade Six pupil at Leeuwenhof Akademie, has had a passion for dance since the age of three, when she started doing ballet.

Her mom, Yolanda, quickly recognised her little girl’s talent and her whole family have supported her every step of the way.

Zandri currently commits herself to 10 hours of training per week, to fulfil her dream of winning a world dance title.

Her trainer, Ashleigh Moore, has been an inspiration and has guided Zandri to become a tough competitor.

“We are thankful that Ashleigh is part of Zandri’s dancing journey, as she continues to work hard with her and preparations have already started for the Gauteng Freestyle championships,” said Yolanda.

Andrea Haddon, also a pupil at Diana Moore Dance World, did extremely well at the competition.

The young woman has been dancing for many years and was named the winner in the 19 and over Solo Ladies section and runner-up in the 19 and over Slowdance section.

When it was Andrea’s turn to take to the floor in the Champion of Champions section she was just pipped at the post by Kalon Badenhorst.

Andrea competed against dancers from all over the country.
