Germiston the hardest hit by water supply interruptions

When will the water normalise?

Over the last week, residents of the East Rand have experienced water supply interruptions.

These have affected Germiston, Benoni, Etwatwa, Daveyton, Brakpan, Bedfordview and Tsakane.

The metro has since reported that Germiston has been the hardest hit, despite municipal efforts to control water demand.

“On Friday, we announced measures to curb the supply from Russell Reservoir from 8pm to 6am but, in the light of persisting high demand, we closed the water from 2pm to 5pm on Saturday, in order to allow the reservoir time to fill up,” said metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe.

The Russell Reservoir currently supplies Ellandshave, Raceway industrial area, Albermale, Dinwiddie, Castleview, Lambton, Hazeldene, Hazel Park and Wadeville.

Two more reservoirs, Hilltop and the Windsor Water Tower, have been since been affected, causing more water supply interruptions in the Germiston area.

The Hilltop Reservoir supplies Dawnview, Simmerfield and Wychwood and the Windsor Water Tower feeds directly to Sunnyridge, Solheim, Symhurst, Gerdview, Fishers’ Hill, Homestead and Marlands.

The metro claims that the interruptions have been due to erratic bulk water supply from Rand Water, as well as unprecedented high water demand which, the metro claims, is driven by hot weather and panic storage of water in large quantities.

It is reported that Rand Water has indicated that they have been experiencing plants failures that affected theirability to supply the normal quantity of bulk water to the metro.

Engineers from the metro and Rand Water have been working around the clock to restore and stabilise the water supply.

However, it is alleged that since some networks and reservoirs were completely dry, the water supply stabilisation will take some time.

The municipality apologises for the inconvenience caused and assures affected residents that teams from both Ekurhuleni and Rand Water are working to speedily restore the situation to normality.

The metro will ensure that roving water tankers are dispatched to all areas experiencing low water pressure and no water in various parts of the region.

  1. This is rediculous. How can they let people be without water for soo long. It’s been 3 days now that we are without water in Primrose/Homestead area. When will this problem be solved?

  3. Why lie, our water was off from early hours Saturday morning. Dont blame the residents typical of this country blame someone else. The only people to blame are the incompetent people employed who squander we are been robbed by the big wigs in this country. Please let them explain all the power failures as well. SICK OF Ekurhuleni.

  4. What are they thinking…power cuts AND water cuts dished out over one week end, really?…we freaken pay for these services, get a freaken life!

  5. I live in Sunnyridge and have been without water for 3 days, with 3 power outages in 48 hours. The water tankers are dispatched, but you have to guess when they will be available. This is totally unacceptable. Obviously our rates are not being used for maintenance.

  6. Had we known about the water outage, we could have collected rainwater on Saturday. But like most people we weren’t even in the area when the water supply was interrupted. And who has a large container for water from the roving tanks. I certainly only have a small bucket, which will barely be enough to fill to cistern le alone have a wash or make some food. And where are these tanks? I haven’t seen one near where I stay, and I know there are people that stay next door that don’t have transport to fetch water or can carry a 5 l water bottle up the stairs. I agree why hasn’t anyone done anything about the pumps at the reservoirs? No like typical south African mentality, wait till all hell breaks loose then only will we do something about it. Watch out water bills are also now going to go through the roof.

  7. So they switched off the water then the pressure whatever..
goes now the reservoir is dry who is trying to bs who here. Then the power also goes out Metro your planning sucks wake up we as residents pay for these services they are not handed to us for free so we DEMAND you resolve it to the big chief at the top did you have water and lights were you able to feed your family; bath and not be thirsty?

  8. Have just moved to Primrose and in the month living here weekly power outages and now 2 days without water. Maybe germiston municipality could ask Boksburg why they have a constant flow of water and electricity as this problem was never experienced while living there!!!

  9. I have no words, basic living conditions and we overpay for every little thing we get. This is insane even the schools are talking about closing. How much will we actually take???? I had enough, I have never seen anything like this. And nobody cares. I agree Michelle, stayed in Boksburg for many years and never experienced this before. And try calling this people just for a simple explanation and answer, good luck. Don’t know how they sleep at night. Will definitely be selling my house soon.

  10. I live in the Sunnyridge area, we permanently have water supply issues….water pressure is not great and water shortages often….and again we pay our bills timely….and should you underpay by R 200,00 be sure that your electricity will be cut without fail…..very sad…

  11. I live also in Sunnyridge area. Get water bills of R1000 without electricity. With electricity it is R3200. Which must be paid on time or your service will be suspended. But what services do we really get from the Municipality. I have seen someone come to do a reading on the water and electricity 4 months ago bI am at home all day
Where do they get that from. It is PATHETIC.

    GATVOL GATVOL GATVOL!!!

  15. I live in the Symhurst area. We have been without water since Saturday. Came back on Sunday night and then nothing again!! This is ridiculous. They have given us 5 different stories as to why we sitting without water. I heard that they we warned 2 YEARS AGO that if they don’t start maintaining the pumps that this will happen. So stop blaming the residents for using too much water due to the heat. What a load of rubbish!! Two blocks down the road water is streaming out of the pavement but yet we have NO EFFING WATER!!! The ANC IS CANCER!

  16. This is so pathetic! Really, Saturday, sunday, monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday…….. How long should we still wait to bath our families, make bottles for our babies, do our washing, wash the bloody dishes?! Quick to cut the power when we have a water bill of R30 000 for water for two months (wonder where u get that from!!!)Don’t give a damn about 1000’s of rands being wasted on food I had to throw away!!!…. But can’t even provide us with a proper explanation as to why we still don’t have water! What a JOKE! I HATE living in Primrose, and I think Ekhuruleni is the worst! To try and get hold of them is a never ending story! Alexandra have everything very lekker, don’t pay a cent towards water and lights, coz we are paying for it! But we need to sit with this Crap! I’m furious, I pay for services! We demand that we get it!
